Keeping up with tradition
At Anglian Home Surveyors we’re committed to lifelong learning, so we recently attended a ‘Conservation and Repair of Plasters and Renders’ course module at Westdean College. This course provided an understanding of, and covered basic skills in, the conservation and replication of traditional internal and external plaster.
Rendered and plastered masonry and timber-framed buildings with rendered infill panels form a very important part of our historic and traditional building stock. Repair and maintenance can be a major problem, and remedial work and specification are often of poor quality.
This unique course covered the history, documentation, condition survey, repair options, specifications, execution and quality control of remedial works to lime, gypsum and cement-based internal and external wall plasters and renders, from roughcast to stucco, including plain, moulded, modelled and cast work, with practical workshop exercises. View a brief video from the course here.
We’ve always been fascinated by ornate plastering and this excellent hands-on workshop demystified the process. During the course we also enjoyed an exclusive visit to National Trust’s Uppark, spending a few hours viewing the excellent conservation work carried out after the house was significantly damaged by fire in 1989. We were granted access to areas of the property which the public generally does not get to see.
As a leading building surveyor in Cambridge, we believe that we are best placed to offer outstanding building surveys if we truly understand how buildings are constructed and the techniques that contribute to their restoration.
